RETREADS® Motorcycle Club

Our Name and Legacy

The name RETREADS® holds a special significance, inspired by the practice of “retreading” tires during World War II. As new tires were scarce, civilians extended the life of their vehicles by putting new treads on worn-out tires. Similarly, many of us began our motorcycling journeys in our youth but set aside our bikes when life demanded our attention—whether it was marriage, raising a family, or career responsibilities. Now, with more time and resources, we’ve rekindled our love for riding and, in a sense, we’ve been “Retreaded.”

Who We Are

The RETREADS® Motorcycle Club, International, Inc. is a not-for-profit, socially oriented organization with a rich history and a global presence. Founded in 1969 by Navy Chief Petty Officer George Spidell in El Cajon, California, our club has grown to encompass over 5,000 members worldwide. We share two common passions: a love of motorcycling and a life experience of 40 years or more (XL+).

In the early days, our membership soared to 25,000, a testament to the unique spirit and camaraderie of our club. While many organizations and factory-sponsored clubs have since emerged, the essence of the RETREADS® remains unchanged. We continue to cherish the values of friendship, adventure, and the joy of motorcycling.

Where We Are

Our members span the globe, with strongholds in the United States, Canadian Provinces, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. Wherever you are, you’ll find fellow RETREADS® ready to ride and share the road with you.

The RETREADS® Crest

Our crest is more than just a symbol; it represents the pride and heritage of our club:

  • The Name: RETREADS signifies our renewal and return to the road.
  • The Shape: Inspired by a U.S. Navy award, it represents excellence.
  • The Gold Field: Denotes the “Golden Years” over 40.
  • The Red Field and Stallions: Represent valor, strength, and teamwork.
  • The Bar Sinister: Symbolizes the bruises and lessons learned on our journey to becoming skilled riders.
  • The White Field: Reflects our purity of mind, along with the anxiety we felt during our first tight squeeze on the road.
  • The Roman Numerals XL “PLUS”: Celebrate our age—because life truly begins at 40.
  • The Blue Overbar: Indicates the state or province of the member.

We wear this crest with pride, as it designates us as members of a select group that enjoys the thrill of motorcycling, the joy of good times, and the camaraderie of many laughs and miles of open road.
